Definition of Conditional Sentence

Conditional sentences are complex sentences (compound sentences) which are formed from subordinate clauses that begin with the subordinate conjunction if in the form of conditions and the main clause in the form of result / consequence (result). There are 4 types of conditional sentences that are commonly used, namely: type 1, type 2, type 3, and type 0.

In general, the conditional sentence formula is as follows.

If-clause dapat menempati awal atau tengah kalimat. Ketika if-clause menempati awal kalimat, koma ditempatkan sebelum main clause.

Conditional Sentence Type 1

Type 1 conditional sentences or first conditionals are used when the result / consequence of the condition has the possibility to materialize in the future because the conditions are realistic to fulfill.

Formulas and Examples of Type 1 Conditional Sentences:

if + simple present, simple future “will” / imperative

1If I meet himI will introduce myself.
(Jika saya bertemu dia, saya akan memperkenalkan diri.)
2I will cook dinner tonight if you clean the house.
(Saya akan memasak makan malam jika kamu membersihkan rumah.)

Bani: Oh, no. I forgot to bring my English textbook. 

Rayan: Don’t worry, Bani. If you don’t bring your textbook, Mr. Evans will lend you one. Last week Bobby didn’t bring his textbook and Mr. Evans said that it was okay, so he lent him one.
